Name Melpomene (Mel) - the muse of tragedy, I find it both ironic and fitting.
Gender She-cat
Age 27 Moons
Rank Others cat - no rank
Mentor/Apprentice N/A
Kin N/A
Love Interest Nope
Personality Mel is a kindly and flirtatious she-cat with a bounce in her step and a confidant stance. She always has a kind thing to mention, a compliment, a word of praise. She is also bashfully honest. She understands the privacy of certain matters and prefers to pull other cats away when she has to break bad news. She likes to speak the truth, but doesn’t find her word all that important. Although she seems befitting of Silentclan, she’d much rather prefer the solitary life of a rogue for the sake of the freedom and joy of it. This is Mel… or, at least, the part she wants you to know about.
Melpomene is, in reality, none of the afore mentioned traits. She is incredibly tricky. Gifted with a silver tongue and a golden apple (queue Greek/Roman myth, anybody?), Mel can easily talk any cat into doing what she wants them to do, without ever asking them to do it. She can switch masks with the drop of a hat and can turn on the waterworks in a flash. In fact, Mel believes she is such a good actress that she will go to the length of self harm in order to preserve her double life. She loves to watch great and powerful cats come crashing down, and she loves to mislead the young. Whenever she appears to be telling a truth, she is lying right through her teeth. It’s difficult to tell between her fact and her fiction, because even the fact seems blurred by her words. She is manipulative in all definitions of the word, but has somehow managed to convince everyone otherwise throughout her seasons of life.
Appearance
Melpomene is a contradiction. Her pelt is long and white as snow, her eyes like large crystal orbs. She was the only kit in her litter who wasn’t deaf, however, allowing for her to survive. She’s actually quite small and dainty in appearance. Where long and graceful steps would have given her even greater beauty, she has a smaller gait that isn’t incredibly graceful. She isn’t beautiful in the sense of the word. She makes herself appear beautiful via her words and her glances, but the cats who can see through her words can see that she is small, with wiry fur and a torn ear from a past mistake.
Other/History How did Melpomene become such a conniving misfit? The truth, she has quite a story to tell. Born in a rather large litter of five, Melpomene was the only one who wasn’t born deaf. Even her mother was born deaf, giving her an awkward and booming voice. Mel never knew her father, and has grown to not like or trust toms because of this. She has grown up believing that her father - and all toms - are made only to abandon and lie. In order to defend herself, Melpomene learned the art of the silver tongue. She can talk her way out of virtually anything which, luckily for her deaf family, didn’t help much in her younger life. By the time she believed she was old enough to take care of herself, she planned on leaving her family for good. And she did. Her first attempt, she felt guilty and returned to her family before anyone noticed. The second time, she left. She managed to leave for a couple of days before she returned to guilt, and ran back home. What she found there was nothing but tragedy. Wolves had found her family - deaf and helpless - and killed every last one of them. Scarred with this memory, Mel has been on the run since. She associates herself with her father for abandoning her family as well. Melpomene has a strange habit of placing her words with her actions. Because she grew up the only one who could hear, she had to learn how to make the correct motions in order to communicate with her siblings. When she was younger, she blamed herself for the tragedy that happened to her family after she left - blaming herself in saying that if she had been there to hear the wolves, she would have been able to save them. But, now, she has shunned this thought process entirely. Now she believes firmly in every-cat-for-himself and scoffs at her foolish family, saying it was their fault for not being vigilant. Mel is ridden with guilt because of her past, but she has successfully dug it all deep where no one will be able to make it resurface. Or, so she thinks.
Mel has never been in love, due to her anger towards the opposite sex. She has never dreamed of having kits, partly because of an underlying fear that her kits would be born deaf like the rest of her family. It would take a lot to change her mind, and she has way too much of an agenda to even imagine letting all the treachery and clever wording go for some kits and a mate.
Melpomene is the figurehead of tragedy. She takes a hero - strong, brave, at his peak - feeds a very poisonous seed, and leads him to his doom. To everyone, she first seems beautiful and elegant and kind, but everything she says has a double meaning.
((I kind of got a little extensive with her, but it's key to figuring her out. ))
